AFRICA/ALGERIA - Salafi leaders: let us close all the churches in the Country

Monday, 11 May 2015

Algiers (Agenzia Fides) - We have to close all Christian churches scattered on the Algerian territory, and turn them into mosques, where possible. This is the proposal launched by the Algerian Salafist leader Abdel Fattah Zarawi, President of the Free Salafist Front of Algeria, that passes it off as a legitimate reaction to incidents of Islamophobia which, in his opinion, are spreading in many European countries, starting from France. This is reported by Algerian sources consulted by Agenzia Fides. In the campaign against churches, relaunched on social networks and blogs linked to Salafist groups, even the basilicas of Algeria (such as Notre Dame d'Afrique in Algiers and the basilica of St. Augustine in Annaba) are referred to as residues of the colonial era from which the Country must be freed.
