Istanbul (Agenzia Fides) - His Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, convened the Summit of Halki II on environment and ecology, which from 8 to 10 June will be hosted by the Theological Institute on the island of Halki and will be titled "Theology, Ecology and Word: an interview on environment, literature and arts". This is reported by official sources of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, consulted by Agenzia Fides.
The International Conference dedicated to the environment, sponsored in partnership with the Southern New Hampshire University, is part of the long tradition of initiatives and study sessions - started with the International Symposium on Religion, Science and Environment, held in 1995 in Patmos, the island where the Revelation was written - dedicated by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the issue of the protection of creation on the spur of Patriarch Bartholomew and Metropolitan of Pergamon Iohannis, universally considered one of the greatest living Christian theologians. "The aim of the conference - said the Ecumenical Patriarch in a greeting message released by the media of the Patriarchate - is to deepen the literary and philosophical roots of our concern regarding a balanced and sustainable management of the environment"
Speakers include writers like Terry Tempest Williams and theologians like the Anglican Timothy Gorringe. Their interventions - explains the Primus inter pares of the Orthodox Primates - will help to reaffirm the need to protect the environment in particular enhancing the beauty of creation as God's gift.
