AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - South African Bishops' donate money for the victims of xenophobic violence

Wednesday, 6 May 2015

Johannesburg (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of South Africa, through the foundation by them promoted, have donated 100,000 Rand to bring relief to the victims of the recent xenophobic attacks. The sum was donated to the pastoral center for refugees of the Archdiocese of Durban, one of the cities where most of the violent acts of xenophobia were registered. Most of the donation will be used for the reception center for the displaced in the central area of the city, managed by Denis Hurley Centre, promoted by the Catholic Church. According to a note sent to Agenzia Fides, the project coordinator, Makusha Hupenyu, thanked the Bishops for the donation.
More than seventy people have been killed in the xenophobic violence in recent weeks. The Bishops have condemned the wave of xenophobia against foreigners from other African countries and Asia (see Fides 17/04/2015). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 06/05/2015)
