Managua (Agenzia Fides) - "Informed citizenry is able to build a just and democratic society" stressed His Exc. Mgr. Silvio José Báez Ortega, OCD, Auxiliary Bishop of Managua (Nicaragua), after Mass on Sunday, May 3, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.
According to information sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishop also noted that "the lack of press freedom does not just mean to prosecute journalists or control newspapers, but there are other ways to limit press freedom. On this day we should all be aware of the importance of what it means to have freedom of information. Information that can inform and form the conscience of the people".
According to a report for the year 2014 of the international organization Freedom House presented last week, the countries where press freedom declined in 2014 are Honduras, Peru and Venezuela, then Mexico, Cuba and Ecuador. Nicaragua, according to the report, is in the group of "partially free" countries. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 05/05/2015)
