AFRICA/SUDAN - Omar Hassan al-Bashir re-elected President with 94% of the votes

Tuesday, 28 April 2015

Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - Outgoing President of Sudan, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, was re-elected Head of State in the elections held two weeks ago (see Fides 13/04/2015). Official data of the National Electoral Commission said that Bashir obtained 94% of the votes, equal to 5.2 million votes. The party of the re-elected President, the National Congress Party (NCP), won 323 of the 426 seats in the Parliamentary Assembly.
The opposition boycotted the vote in protest against the oppression of civil society and the media system, saying that it was impossible to continue a credible campaign. The boycott by the opposition seems to have been one of the reasons for the low turnout, observed by the observers of the African Union, according to which only 40% of voters went to the polls.
