ASIA/BANGLADESH - Economic incentives for pregnant women and children under 5 years of age

Wednesday, 25 March 2015

Dhaka (Agenzia Fides) - The Government of Bangladesh has recently introduced economic incentives for pregnant women and children under five years of age in some selected districts, particularly in the north of the Country, to encourage them to be assisted in health facilities. In agreement with the Ministry of Health, the project will last five years and is currently in force in 42 regions of 7 districts. The aim is to reduce maternal deaths and combat child malnutrition. Currently at least 194 women per 100,000 die during childbirth. Bangladesh is among the top 10 countries with the highest prevalence of malnutrition. Studies show that the majority of mothers die in childbirth, since only 30% give birth in facilities with qualified personnel. It is therefore necessary to ensure prenatal care and medical check-ups. It remains a challenge to maintain the quality of services offered, given that the structures in the villages do not carry out basic tests during pregnancy. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 25/03/2015)
