AFRICA/NIGERIA - Cardinal Onaiyekan: "We need a change in policy, people are tired"

Monday, 23 March 2015

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "There has to be change in the policy of Nigeria, no matter who wins on March 28", said Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria. On March 20, in his speech for the celebration of Cathedraticum in the church of San Giovanni in Abuja, Cardinal Onaiyekan said: "My position is that there has to be change. I do not care who wins, whether it is PDP or APC, but whoever wins, there has to be change because people are not happy with what is happening; people are hungry, people are suffering".
"We must claim the prophecy of Prophet Isaiah. The year is full of pessimism, anxiety and fear. It is like people no longer believe in this nation. People are running away but people like us cannot run away. We need to replace pessimism with optimism. Whoever wins will have to act differently", reaffirmed the Cardinal.
After having invited to pray for peaceful elections Cardinal Onaiyekan said he was optimistic on the fact that Boko Haram will be defeated, and recalled the sufferings of the people of the north affected by the violence of the Islamist sect. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 23/03/2015)
