AFRICA/EGYPT - The Egyptian government reviews Islamic religious education programs to combat extremism

Tuesday, 17 March 2015

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - The Ministry of Awqaf - in charge of endowments to mosques and religious communities - announced that it has completed a draft revision of the general programs of religious education that will progressively be applied to all levels of school education in Egypt. Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, head of the Government department, expressed words of appreciation for the great work done in a short period of time by the Review Panel. This was reported by Egyptian sources consulted by Agenzia Fides.
The initiative is an eloquent response to the appeal made by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, who in his important speech in early January before and religious scholars of Al Azhar - the greatest theological center of Sunni Islam - had invited religious leaders of Islam to favor a "religious revolution" in order to eradicate bigotry and replace it with a "more enlightened vision of the world" (see Fides 02/01/2015).
