ASIA/HOLY LAND - Liturgy at the Holy Sepulchre to commemorate the Armenian Genocide

Monday, 9 March 2015

Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides) - In Jerusalem, the leading event dedicated to the centenary of the Armenian Genocide will be held on April 24, at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. It will be a memorial liturgy and it will be presided by the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin. The news was released by the Armenian media and comes from Georgette Avagian, head of the Armenian National Committee of Israel.
In his official intervention (including the UN conference last January 29) President Rivlin has repeatedly made reference to the Armenian Genocide, not yet officially recognized by Israel. On 13 May, the Israeli Parliament had discussed the issue in a plenary session, at the request of a motion presented by Zehava Gal-On, spokesman of the leftist Party Meretz, in which the Israeli government is asked to recognize the Armenian Genocide before commemorating its centenary in 2015 (see Fides May 14, 2014). Meanwhile, on March 4, the hundred years since the "Big Evil" were commemorated in an Assembly session of the Syrian people - the parliament in Damascus - with an initiative promoted in particular by the Syrian Christian Parliamentary Maria Saadeh.
