AFRICA/TOGO – Bishops’ appeal for peaceful and transparent elections

Friday, 6 March 2015

Lome (Agenzia Fides) - "May the next elections be carried out in a calm, fair and transparent manner". This is what the Bishops of Togo in a message issued at the end of their ordinary meeting ask for, sent to Agenzia Fides.
The Episcopal Conference has announced three days of fasting and prayer, form March 12 to 14, to "implore the grace of peace in Togo."
The presidential elections in Togo, initially planned within the first days of March, will be held on April 15. Togo has been living social tension for a few years, linked to the economy and the demand from the opposition of constitutional reforms and policies. The Catholic Church is particularly involved in the efforts for peace and reconciliation (see Fides 10/07/2013). (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 06/03/2015)
