Erevan (Agenzia Fides) - The recent announcement of a statement that the Armenian Parliament may soon adopt, to express condemnation of the massacres suffered a century ago by the Greeks and Assyrians in Ottoman territories who remained under the Turkish domain, was welcomed by associations and militant groups involved in the protection of the historical memory of those tragic events, defined respectively as "Greek Genocide" and "Assyrian Genocide".
"We consider this initiative very important. I would like to express my gratitude to the promoters, and I hope that for the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, the National Assembly can actually adopt the statement, condemning the Genocide of Greeks and Assyrians", said Slava Rafaelidis, director of the NGO "Ilios", which represents the Greek community in Armenia.
The draft declaration reaffirms that all ethnic and religious minorities were the subject of the massacres perpetrated by the Young Turks. Less than two years ago, the idea of adopting a similar statement - sponsored by some Armenian political parties - had been rejected by the Parliament of Erevan. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 13/02/2015)
