AFRICA/KENYA - Attorney-General proposes a meeting to review the proposed regulations on religious groups

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Attorney-General of Kenya has invited representatives of different religious communities in the country to a meeting to discuss the controversial measure of regulation of religious organizations and their activities. The three-day retreat will be held in Naivasha by the end of March, said Prof Githu Muigai.
Several Christian churches proposed changes to the regulations. The proposal provides, among other things, that religious leaders (ministers, imams, pastors, rabbis) must present certificates of good conduct and the clearance certificates from the anti-graft commission. Churches, mosques, temples or any other religious groupings will be required to file annual reports by March every year for them to be allowed to conduct their affairs.
The organisations must also give their audited accounts for the financial year to the Registrar of Societies, the draft circular from the Deputy Registrar of Societies. Foreign ministers must also provide a copy of a work permit from immigration as well as a recommendation letter from their respective embassy and a copy of their alien identity card. (L.M.)
