AMERICA/MEXICO - The Archdiocese of Acapulco committed to protecting young people from criminal gangs

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Acapulco (Agenzia Fides) - The Archdiocese of Acapulco has prepared a program to save young people who "work", or are at risk of working as hitmen for organized crime gangs that operate in the state of Guerrero. The program is part of a larger project of the archdiocese, which focuses on the care of victims of violence, which began in 2012 with the so-called "Accompanying centers" (Centro Integral de Acompagnamento, CIA) already operating throughout the archdiocese. These centers offer spiritual, psychological and legal assistance to victims of violence.
The note sent to Fides by the archdiocese stressed that the project insists on prevention. These centers rely on volunteers who report youth at risk and/or give a hand to young people who have just been released from prison. "It is a model of pastoral care copied from Colombia, where it seems to have greatly helped the youth of this country", concludes Perulero Muñoz. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 12/02/2015)
