AFRICA/SUDAN - Hunger and diseases for the displaced persons in Darfur: food, medicines and basic necessities are needed

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Deribat (Agenzia Fides) - The population who fled the conflict areas in the volcanic area of Jebel Marra in Darfur, in western Sudan, and is now living in the north and in the east of Deribat, complains about the proliferation of many diseases and the shortage of food, medicines and basic necessities. According to humanitarian organizations, since 1 February over 36 000 newly displaced have arrived in North Darfur because of the armed conflict between government forces and rebel movements.
A source of Radio Dabanga reports that the displaced from Fanga and Dobo El Omda, East Jebel Marra, have skin diseases, fever, diarrhea, headaches. Skin diseases began to spread among adults and children a week ago, with rashes that cause itching. The majority of the displaced sought refuge in Tawila, El Fasher, and in the town of Um Baru, registering an increase of almost 16 000 units compared to the previous week.
A rapid intervention of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations is needed, that argue that the real number could be higher, since they are not able to access and verify the situation due to insecurity in Jebel Marra, where fighting is concentrated. The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that aid agencies and UNAMID have registered 4,500 newly displaced people who have sought refuge in the protected area near the base of the peacekeeping mission in Um Baru. It is estimated that 15,500 people have sought refuge in the nearby area. The group remains in the area during the day and goes home at night. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 12/02/2015)
