AFRICA/MOZAMBIQUE - Resignation of the Bishop of Lichinga and appointment of successor

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On February 8, 2015 the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the diocese of Lichinga, in Mozambique, by His Exc. Mgr. Elio Greselin, S.C.I., in accordance with canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law. The Holy Father appointed Rev. Atanasio Amisse Canira, Vicar General of Nacala and National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, as Bishop of the Diocese of Lichinga.
The new Bishop was born on May 2, 1962 in Mossoril, Diocese of Nacala. After completing his primary school studies, he attended the Industrial and Commercial Joaquim Marra Chimoio High School. From 1984 to 1986 he was a student at the Mater Apostolorum preparatory Seminary in Nampula. From 1987 to 1989 he attended the interdiocesan philosophical Sant'Agostinho Major Seminary in Matola, and from 1990 to 1993, the interdiocesan St. Pio X Theological Seminary in Maputo.
He was ordained a priest on 12 December 1993 and incardinated in the diocese of Nacala, the first priest of the clergy of the ecclesiastical Circumscription. After ordination he has served in a number of pastoral and academic roles: 1994-1996: Pastor in solidum in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Paz in Namapa; 1996-1998: Sent to Rome for a Licentiate in Moral Theology and Spirituality at the St. Alfonsiana Academy; 1998-2001: Pastor of the Cathedral in Nacala; 2002-2007: Spiritual Director of the Theological interdiocesan S. Pio X major Seminary in Maputo; since 2008: Pastor of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Purificação in Ilha de Moçambique; since 2010: Vicar General of the Diocese, Episcopal Vicar for the Family, National Director of the PMS (PMS) in Mozambique for the period 2009-2014.
