San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) - "A great joy in the Church of El Salvador to hear the news on the decree approving the martyrdom of Monsignor Romero. Let us continue to pray": was the comment by the Archdiocese of San Salvador sent to Agenzia Fides.
On February 3, the Holy Father received in a private audience Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, during which he authorised the Congregation to promulgate the decree concerning the martyrdom of the Servant of God Oscar Arnolfo Romero Galdámez, Archbishop of San Salvador; born on August 15, 1917 in Ciudad Barrios (El Salvador) and killed in hatred of the faith on March 24, 1980, in San Salvador (El Salvador).
Mgr. Rafael Urrutia, current Vicar for Human Promotion of the Archdiocese of San Salvador, who worked with Mgr. Romero in the last year of his life, and collected the necessary documentation to initiate the cause, told reporters that "the beatification of Mgr. Romero is a victory of faith, a victory of the preached word".
A statement from the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador, sent to Agenzia Fides, informs that the President of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, "has given instructions to the Secretary of Government and Communications to coordinate a team that will have to work alongside the Catholic Church".
"The government (...) and the Salvadoran people rejoice at the decision of Pope Francis to sign the decree of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints for the beatification, through the martyrdom of Monsignor Romero" continues the statement of the Presidency, which concludes: "Although we do not know the details or the date, it will be a historic event".
