Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - Card. Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, has assured the support of the Catholic Church regarding the "Plan de la Alianza para la Prosperidad" (PAP) which involves Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
PAP was officially launched on November 15, 2014 in Washington DC by the Heads of State of these three Central American countries with the support of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of the United States. According to the official document, the alliance "aims to bring a change in the quality of life for people through the development of economic and social opportunities". In particular, PAP will promote foreign investment, improve public education and provide job opportunities; tackle "crime and drug trafficking" and strengthen local institutions on transparency and the fight against corruption.
The note sent to Fides by a local source, informs that the Cardinal spoke yesterday, February 2, at the opening of the school year in St. Teresa of Jesus school in Tegucigalpa, where also the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez was present.
Referring to PAP, the Cardinal said: "For us it is very important that young people in Honduras are given opportunities, so that they can have the opportunity to work and help their families, and thus no longer be obliged to leave the country".
The Cardinal also stated that the topic is an ongoing dialogue with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops of America, and that he expects the US Congress favors the common good with the approval of funds in order to meet the needs of the region and thus prevent the emigration of children and adults.
