Tuesday, 14 December 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - For 25 years at the service of the sick and the poor: AFMAL marks this year its silver wedding with solidarity today 14 December at the Pontifical Urban University .
Sanitary emergency, humanitarian missions, formation of women in Africa, plans for a field hospital: these are the ambits of activity and collaboration which AFMAL narrates through exceptional guests with whom it has walked in these years to realise future programme. Africa is one of the most important ambits of activity for the Association which at present collaborates with the Fondazione Montalcini for the realisation of programme of instruction for African women for formation in the sanitary ambit in their country of origin. The presence at the meeting of Rita Levi Montalcini is testimony of this collaboration to foster development and valorisation of the resources of African countries.
Sanitary emergencies, projects realised, present collaboration will be discussed with Guido Bertolaso, head of the Civil Protection Department and Hon. Mario Baccini, at present Public Finance Minister. Future projects include a field hospital for emergencies and calamities in the world.
The meeting, moderated by Giulio Andreotti, will present the theme of health in the light of the spirit of the St John of God Brothers: “From humanisation of individuals to the humanisation of peoples. When health care is not only therapy” is the title of the meeting which, in tracing the development of AFMAL, intends in particular to recall its founder, Brother Pierluigi Marchesi, prophetic and creative guide of the Order who died in 2002. To his figure is tied the testimony of Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council of Health Care Workers who will underline the innovative process of humanisation of the world of health and medicine of which Brother Marchesi was an attentive interpreter.
The meeting will be opened by AFMAL President, Brother Pietro Cicinelli: present also Brother Pascual Piles, Superior General of the St John of God Brothers and Mons. Josè Luis Redrado, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral of Health. (AP) (14/12/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:31; Parole:354)
