AMERICA/BRAZIL - Recalling the earthquake in Haiti with the testimony of Zilda Arns

Curitiba (Agenzia Fides) - On January 10 about 30,000 Brazilians participated in a ceremony and a Mass in the stadium of the city of Curitiba, Paraná state (southern Brazil) to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti. Religious leaders and the faithful from all over Brazil were present and traveled on dozens of buses to attend the commemoration.
Zilda Arns, who died in the earthquake that devastated Haiti on 12 January 2010, was the founder and head of the Pastoral Care of Children, the Catholic organization that supports nearly 1.3 million poor children and operates in 20 Countries of Latin America, Africa and Asia. During the celebration, the Pastoral Care of Children delivered the request to open the process of beatification to the archdiocese of Curitiba, with nearly 130,000 signatures.
According to the note sent to Agenzia Fides, it now it is up to the Archbishop of Curitiba, Mgr. José Antonio Peruzzo to present the case to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican. Zilda Arns founded the Pastoral care of Children in 1983 and carried out many important actions, for which she received numerous awards, including the Human Rights of the United Nations in 2002. Zilda Arns died at the age of 75 during the earthquake in Haiti, where she was attending a missionary meeting intended to fight child malnutrition in the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 12/01/2015)
