Colombo (Agenzia Fides) - The President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa has promised to reform the presidency and introduce a new constitution if he is re-elected for a third term in the presidential election to be held on January 8, 2015. This is Rajapaksa’s promise in response to the growing public support that the main challenger, Maithripala Sirisena is obtaining, former member of the executive led by Rajapaksa. Sirisena is basing his campaign on a plan of democratic reforms that also plans to reduce presidential powers and strengthen the Parliament.
The election campaign in Sri Lanka is taking place while the Catholic Church is preparing Pope Francis’ planned trip, who will be in the country from 13 to 15 January. President Rajapaksa received criticism for setting the election on the eve of the Pope’s arrival.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, has called on all citizens and political leaders to be united, regardless of who wins the election, in order to welcome the Holy Father.
According to observers, there are fears because in Sri Lanka the pre- and post-election period is usually marked by violence. "In this case - said card. Ranjith - the Catholic Church will take necessary measures". The Cardinal said he has faith "in human goodness" and in the common sense of the leaders and the people". Both candidates hope that the vote is "transparent and free from violence".
Meanwhile, preparations for the Pope's visit are being finalized. Pope Bergoglio will be in Colombo and also in Madhu, the Marian shrine that is located in the north of the island, in the diocese of Mannar. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 29/12/2014)
