AFRICA/ZAMBIA - "Corruption and intra-party conflicts threaten democracy" say the Christian confessions

Tuesday, 16 December 2014

Lusaka (Agenzia Fides) - "We lament at the failure of political leadership in Zambia today. There is far too much hypocrisy and rhetoric. It is for this reason that there is no evidence in the fight against corruption", said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides by the Oasis Forum, an alliance established for the purpose of promoting good governance, democracy, constitutionalism, rule of law, transparency and accountability in the nation. The alliance comprises the following, namely: The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) and the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC).
Zambia is preparing to elect the Head of State on January 20, 2015, after the untimely death of President Michael Sata (see Fides 29/10/2014).
Oasis Forum complains "of having observed with deepest regrets the ugly face of intra-party conflicts that have rocked some political parties in the Country". These are mere symptoms of a fundamental failure by the same political parties to develop their constitutions as well as to respect them".
"The Zambian people ought not to tolerate the assault against democracy and the disintegration of the rule of law (...). Zambia is going through a critical transitional period which everyone should support in order to come out of it a stronger and a more united nation within a political and tribal diversity", the statement concluded.
