Kampala (Agenzia Fides) - “The Catholic Church in Uganda has been committed to fighting AIDS and the spread of the HIV virus since the epidemic first broke out in our country” said Philip Odii, head of Social Communications office of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Uganda, in a statement on the occasion of the recent World AIDS Day. Father Odii recalls that the first Pastoral Letter on the issue was published in 1989 and all 19 dioceses have HIV/AIDS Focal Point offices working with health coordination offices to “maintain high standards of medical service offered to the people of God”.
According to data from DHIS 2 , a tool for collection, validation, analysis, and presentation of statistical data, On the overall, the Catholic Health facilities currently reporting through the DHIS2 system recorded 90,646 clients, actual cumulative figures however should be higher as some of the facilities have not started reporting through the DHIS2 system.
The local Catholic Church is also present in the fight against AIDS/HIV through its currently running projects to the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission
“As we mark this year’s world AIDS day, it is imperative upon all of us, men and women of reproductive age, to ensure that we are part of the goal of moving to zero new HIV infections. Each one of us has a role to play,” the Catholic Bishops of Uganda insisted.”. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 5/12/2014)
