AMERICA/PERU - COP 20: world meeting for climatic justice, churches together to care for creation

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – Members and partners of the World Council of Churches (WCC) have called for the promotion from a faith perspective of a cause for climatic justice during the 20th United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP20 or CMP10, of parties to the Kyoto protocol taking place in Lima, Peru, from December 1-12, 2014, (UNFCCC). COP 20 is another step forward towards drafting a declaration to replace the Kyoto protocol (signed in 1997), aimed at seriously mitigating emissions of gas the cause of global warming and discussing adaptation to present climate change affecting millions of people all over the world.
Dr Guillermo Kerber, coordinator of the WCC programme "Care for Creation and Climate Justice" described the meeting "an opportunity to strengthen ecumenical and interreligious ties and give visibility to the work of the world’s Churches regarding issues of climate change and protection of the environment".
A local Fides source speaks of massive media coverage given to the Conference: "Delegates from 195 different countries attending the Lima meeting, aim to draft a global agreement to tackle climate change: the agreement is to be approved in France in 2015 ".
In a lengthy statement on the Lima gathering, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Peru affirms: "A major event on 5 December will be a high level meeting on human development, involving bishops from all over the world with representatives of the governments participating in the COP 20 summit".
