AFRICA/UGANDA - Domestic violence at the center of reflection for Advent

Friday, 14 November 2014

Kampala (Agenzia Fides) – The local Episcopal Conference has launched the campaign "shared decisions, shared development, shared happiness".
"We want to intensify awareness so that we can bring about good behaviour as we get close to the celebration of Christmas and we encourage all church leaders to preach against domestic violence" said His Exc. Mgr. John Baptist Odama, Archbishop of Gulu and President of the Episcopal Conference of Uganda.
Starting November 30, the first Sunday of Advent, the Catholic Church will commence reciting prayers at catholic parishes and sub-parishes across the country in a bid to end domestic violence. The main campaign against domestic violence in Uganda has been going on since 2010 in partnership with Irish Aid and Trócaire. According to official statistics, which cover only the reported cases, there were 2,793 cases of domestic violence with 9,278 victims in 2012. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/11/2014)
