ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Catholic students: bring the message of Christ in schools and universities

Wednesday, 12 November 2014

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - It is now more urgent than ever to proclaim the message of Christ and give Christian witness in schools and universities: says the Federation of Catholic Students, a movement that celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Foundation in Korea, relaunching its evangelizing action.
As reported in a note sent to Agenzia Fides by the Archdiocese of Seoul, the students promote a spirituality of peace and harmony, and said they were "ready to bring faith into our every day lives, ready to be at the service of every college student and look at society through the eyes of God", said Stella Byun Ji-young, President of the Federation, describing their pastoral work as "a church that works within schools and universities".
The Federation is composed of 48 Catholic student associations, present in 36 among universities, colleges and educational institutions. The members meet weekly for prayer, Bible study and to give their testimony of faith. At the beginning and end of each semester a Mass is celebrated in the university.
"70% of our student members have left their city to come and study in Seoul", explained Don Joseph Eun Sung-je, "but have problems to join the local parishes: for this reason the presence of the movement and prayer in the university are valuable". "In a highly competitive society like Korea, university students face many challenges. Furthermore, the values of the secular world can differ greatly from the teachings of the Gospel", explains Byun Ji-young. "Sharing a journey of faith with other students is helpful and gives us the strength to face daily challenges and problems", he says. (PA) (Agenzia 12/11/2014)
