AFRICA/NIGERIA - Archbishop Kaigama: "Politicians must abandon the electoral struggle and unite to fight Boko Haram"

Monday, 10 November 2014

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "It is time for our politicians to put aside the election campaign and unite to fight Boko Haram", said His Exc. Mgr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of Jos and President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria, commenting on the attack which today, 10 November, killed at least 78 people and injured 45 in a public high school in Potiskum, in north-eastern Nigeria. The attack was attributed to Boko Haram.
Mgr. Kaigama who has just arrived in Nigeria from London, where he attended a conference on religious freedom, says: "Unfortunately I am not surprised to hear that such attacks continue, because the strategy adopted to combat Boko Haram does not appear believable. It is particularly disturbing to see how much Boko Haram continues to advance in Borno and Adamawa States, despite the significant deployment of military forces and security in those areas. How this can happen leaves us puzzled. No one so far has given us an answer. I think our politicians are too busy involved in next year’s election campaign".
"The time has come to move beyond the petty political interests and thimk about the interest of the nation" says the Archbishop of Jos. "Everyone should temporarily put aside the political battle and instead focus on strategies to address this critical situation, with entire populations fleeing or living in insecurity. It is time to demonstrate true patriotism and go beyond the quest for power", concluded Mgr. Kaigama. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/11/2014)
