ASIA/INDONESIA - The Bishops: "A Church which 'goes forth' to meet the man of our time"

Thursday, 6 November 2014

Jakarta (Agenzia Fides) - "A Church in communion with God and proclaims the Good News; a Church that goes forth to meet people, to give love and happiness, peace and justice, unity and brotherhood; a Church which is sensitive to the breath of the Holy Spirit, to strengthen faith for a better future": is the idea of the Church outlined by the Indonesian Bishops who have started their annual meeting of study and research from 3 to November 13. The Bishops listened to a report of a Muslim scholar on the subject of pluralism and of a Franciscan on hopes for the mission of the Church today, led by Pope Francis. During the assembly some religious women shared their experiences at the service of AIDS patients and victims of sexual abuse, while members of the Community of Sant'Egidio told the Bishops the work carried out concerning street children.
According to a report sent to Agenzia Fides by Fr. Kamilus Pantus, Executive Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications, during group work the Bishops discussed how to renew the face of the Church in Indonesia, according to the apostolic exhortation "Evangelii Gaudium", elaborating a text which expresses the formulation of "a new way of being Church in Indonesia".
The meeting continues with the report of the various episcopal commissions with the participation of a Cardinal, 36 Bishops, three Bishop-emeritus, an Apostolic Administrator.
At the opening of the assembly the Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia, Archbishop Antonio Guido Filippazzi, the Secretary General of the Indonesian Communion of Churches (Protestants) and a representative of the Ministry of Religious Affairs were present. (PCP-PA) (Agenzia Fides 06/11/2014)
