AFRICA/EGYPT - For the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch extremist groups are a product of the West

Moscow (Agenzia Fides) - Extremist groups, with their large-scale offensive are upsetting the geopolitical scenarios in the Middle East, and are also a product of wrong strategies pursued in the West. This was denounced by the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch Tawadros II in a television interview broadcast on Tuesday, November 4 by television network al Hayat, on the occasion of the visit that the Primate of the Orthodox Coptic Church is carrying out in Russia. Responding to the interviewer's questions, Pope Tawadros made explicit reference to Western complicity towards extremist fanatical groups, aiming at reshaping the balance of power in the entire region. A project that, according to the Coptic Patriarch, also includes the total evacuation of the indigenous Christian communities in that area of the world.
In this regard, Pope Tawadros defined the confidence of those who expect aid from the West to the Christian communities in the Arab countries and the Middle East misguided. Even in Egypt, seeing the media reactions triggered also when the door of a church was burned - said the Patriarch - "some thought that America could protect us". But then, when in August of 2013 dozens of churches and Christian schools were attacked and destroyed by Islamists, "no one did anything".
During the interview Pope Tawadros also confirmed that in the forthcoming elections, the Church will not support any particular list, and Christian candidates will be placed in all the lists, as established by the new Constitution. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 05/11/2014)
