AMERICA/COLOMBIA – There is a risk of an outbreak of Chikungunya and Dengue: 4,500 cases in the last two months

Cartagena (Agenzia Fides) - The cases of Dengue fever and Chikungunya in the city of Cartagena and Bolivar do not give signs of stopping. In the month of September alone, 28 girls were diagnosed with chikungunya and 30 with Dengue, while 27 boys with Chikungunya and 28 with Dengue. At the Children's Hospital Napoleon Franco Pareja La Casa del Niño, 55 children were assisted. Over the past two months, the Centre has been extremely busy mainly due to the emergence of these two viruses that are spreading in other towns and cities across the Country. The District Administration Department of Health (Dadis) confirmed that in recent months the total number of sick children, according to statistics of the National System for Public Health Surveillance (SIVIGILA) is 175 in the age group 0 to 15. Including adults, there is a total number of 4,500 cases. Dadis is engaged in various villages and neighborhoods, public awareness campaigns, fumigation and destruction of breeding sites of the mosquito vector of chikungunya.
