AMERICA/ARGENTINA - The Bishops' spot: where are the children who disappeared during the State terrorism?

Tuesday, 28 October 2014

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - For the first time in Argentina's history, the Bishops publicly ask for news about missing children during the last dictatorship. The President of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina, His Exc. Mgr. José María Arancedo, Archbishop of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz, has recorded a spot along with some "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo" (Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo), in which he asked on behalf of all the Bishops, that those who are in possession of information in this regard to provide it to the authorities.
"We urge people who have information about where the children were seized, or are aware of the clandestine burial sites, to recognize that they have a moral obligation to report it to the competent authorities", reports the note sent to Fides. The spot will be aired in these days and for one month on all television and radio networks.
Recently, the President of the Social Pastoral Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Argentina, His Exc. Mgr. Jorge Lozano, Bishop of Gualeguaychú (Entre Rios), wrote a letter in which he made a similar request to clarify the cases of children born in a situation of lack of freedom. "There was a network of silence and complicity that hid the truth", said Mgr. Lozano in the letter, reiterating the "moral obligation" of those who have information.
"We are committed to seeking the truth with the certainty that this sets us free" said Mgr. Jose Maria Arancedo, according to the note sent to Fides. The text of the spot, entitled "Faith moves toward the truth", recalls a statement of the Argentine Bishops in November 2012. There are still about 400 families who are looking for their grandchildren "given away" or who disappeared during the period of State terrorism. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 28/10/2014)
