Dodoma (Agenzia Fides) - According to the 2011-12 Report on indicators of HIV and Malaria in Tanzania, the prevalence of the AIDS/HIV virus in the African country went from 5.7% in 2007 to 5.1% in 2012. Women contract AIDS more than men, and every year about 80 thousand Tanzanians are infected. Twenty thousand new infections occur among young people in the age group ranging from 15 to 24, two-thirds of these are girls. Less than 50% of the boys are aware of the virus. The project "Mabinti Tushike Hatimu", currently underway in four districts of the regions where there is the highest rate of HIV cases in Tanzania (Iringa, Mbeya and Dar es Salaam), groups of girls in 27 villages are being taken care of by the NGO Restless Development. In March 2014 over 3,300 members and about 250 community leaders were trained on the rights of girls. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 17/10/2014)
