EUROPE/SPAIN - While 805 million people suffer from hunger, 30% of food is wasted

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – On October 17, Spain celebrates International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Within the campaign "One Family, food for everyone", Caritas and the NGO Manos Unidas have organized a series of activities in the province of Soria to raise awareness on the problem of hunger in the world which affects 805 million people: one every nine suffer from chronic malnutrition, while 30% of all food produced is wasted. The aim of the campaign is to claim the right of every human being to have sufficient, healthy and adequate food in order to live a dignified life, as well as the responsible use of natural resources. Caritas and Manos Unidas direct their appeal to the people, the institutions and the public and private bodies so that they commit themselves towards a concrete realization of the right to food and sustainable development for everyone.
