AFRICA/ZAMBIA - "We are greatly concerned about the well-being of the President" say civil society

Lusaka (Agenzia Fides) - "We are greatly concerned about the wellbeing of President Michael Sata" say several society organisations in Zambia, including the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection, in a statement sent to Fides Agency.
"We have been saddened by the callous nature with which his absence from public life has been handled. This has resulted in public ridicule of our President with among other things, embarrassing coverage in international media on the status of our President", the statement said. Concerns about the health of the Head of State have been strengthened after Sata did not deliver his speech to the General Assembly.
On September 19, during his speech to the Parliament of Zambia, the President appeared out of breath and was forced to reduce his intervention in a rather confusing manner. A fact stigmatized by the statement, asking "why the President was subjected to such an ordeal" and calls into question "the sensitivity and sincerity of the government" in exposing the Head of State to such a situation. The petitioners therefore demand calling on cabinet to constitute medical board or indeed calls for government to prove that the President is well or is indeed alive. (L.M.)
