AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Strong commitment of the Diocese of Quilmes against human trafficking and related crimes

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Quilmes (Agenzia Fides) - Mgr. Carlos José Tissera, Bishop of Quilmes, will celebrate today a Mass in the Cathedral for the victims of human trafficking. The celebration, which is held every second Thursday of the month, always sees the participation of a growing number of faithful of the diocese. One in particular prays for the release of all the people who were victims of human trafficking, so that hope is strengthened, and families can be reunited with all those missing. We thank the Lord for those who have been saved, we pray for those who are working against human trafficking and for the society's commitment to eradicate this scourge.
"Human trafficking is one of the worst human rights violations. It is the slavery of modern times. Each year, thousands of people, mostly women and children are exploited by criminals and are obliged to forced labor and sex trade. Our country is not free from this phenomenon", states the letter sent to Fides from Quilmes.
The Diocese of Quilmes opened the "Departamento de Trata de personas y delitos conexos" on September 18, which is responsible for collecting reports on the situation of human trafficking and related crimes. According to the diocese the most common cases of trafficking are related to sexual exploitation, arranged marriages, and various forms of slavery and forced labor, begging, abuse, organ trafficking. Another task of this office is to make people aware of this serious problem, also present in the Argentine reality. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 09/10/2014)
