EUROPE/ITALY - A year ago, the tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea, memory and heritage

Friday, 3 October 2014

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "3rd October 2014, let’s go back one year: 368 migrants died in the waters of our sea. And after another 60, another 40, another 35.... Today we pray for our brothers and sisters -. Sister Neusa Mariano de Fatima, Superior General of the Missionaries Scalabrini, in a note sent to Fides Agency – recalls the tradgedy. In our minds we have the images of floating bodies, and with them their stories and their hopes sank, too. Today we do not want to commemorate a tragedy, which has in itself contradictions, indifference, silence, but we want to celebrate the day of the concrete reception of the survivors of the ordeal of those who are alive, of the dreams of unaccompanied minors. May the sadness we feel become emotion and decision to carry out concrete actions in the name of Jesus who today tells us: 'I was a stranger and you welcomed me' (Mt 25, 35)".
