ASIA/IRAQ - The Universities in the north open its doors to student-refugees of the Nineveh Plain

Friday, 26 September 2014

Kirkuk (Agenzia Fides) - College students who fled from Mosul and from towns and villages in the Nineveh Plain under the violent offensive of jihadists of the Islamic State (IS) can hold their exams at other universities scattered in northern Iraq. This was reported by local official sources consulted by Fides Agency. The measure of acceptance, advertised with a notice by the political bodies that deal with education and the right to education in Iraq and in the autonomous Region of Iraqi Kurdistan, will allow thousands of students from public and private colleges - including many young Christians - not to lose the academic year in spite of the military and political convulsions that shake the region.
Several universities and colleges have had to suspend all activities after the escalation of jihadists. Even the University of Kirkuk, the University of Dohuk and Salahddin University in Erbil will open the doors to university students forced to flee from their homes. The exam sessions for students displaced will be held from Sunday, September 28.
In the meantime, at least in the area of Erbil, funds from the central and the regional government to the tens of thousands of refugees forced to flee from Mosul and the Nineveh Plain are being distributed. The lists of IDPs surveyed in the region are made public in reception centers where certificates that provide access to small grants to be used for the purchase of essential goods are also issued.
