Montevideo (Agenzia Fides) - "We dream and fight to make this country a place where human life and the family are worth more than a hectare of land, a bank account, a degree or a particular skill. And so that young people’s ambitions is not simply to have a mobile, a bike or a title in order to earn more money". This is what was expressed by the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay in a statement during the campaign that the country is experiencing in view of the upcoming general elections on 26 October. In the text, sent to Fides Agency, the Bishops ask people to pray for the "future leaders" who will be elected and express the need to vote in favor of a society that offers its members the opportunity to "develop the talents God gives to each one".
"As Christians, we want to help ensure that our act of voting becomes a serious commitment with society ... so, even in the darkest scenes, one will be able to see the road toward justice, freedom and solidarity", write the Bishops. The statement concludes with an invitation to all to participate in the Day of Prayer for the Nation, called for on October 12.
The presidential and parliamentary elections will be held in Uruguay on October 26. The possibility of a run-off is set on 30 November. The change of this election is represented by the new voters: 250,000 young people have grown up with new technologies, away from traditional media but fully integrated into the new global social networks. Uruguay has a population of 3,381,000 inhabitants, of whom 2,603,000 are Catholics. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 26/09/2014)
