AFRICA/LIBYA - Not only in Syria and Iraq, air raids also continue in Libya

Thursday, 25 September 2014

Tripoli (Agenzia Fides) - While the attention of the whole world is focused on the bombings of the Arab-American coalition on extremist groups in Syria and Iraq, in Libya the bombings against emplacements of the so-called "Libya Dawn Operation", the Islamist coalition that has taken control of Tripoli (see Fides 11/09/2014), and the jihadi groups present in Benghazi continue.
Local sources report that last night a loud explosion in Tripoli was heard. According to the Libya Herarld newspaper, unidentified aircraft have carried out several raids in the past 48 hours against the coalition "Libya Dawn" emplacements including the base of Yarmouk. Other air raids have targeted the port of Benghazi.
Much has been speculated on the identity of the mysterious aircraft that have been hitting the opposition of the coalition of "Operation Dignity" for weeks, led by General Khakifa Haftar, supported by some Arab states that oppose the seizure of power in Libya of factions linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. The United Arab Emirates (that, however, have denied their involvement) have very often been mentioned, and seem to be using Mirage2000-9, but not the F16 Block60 of American origin because they have not have had the approval from Washington for their use in Libya.
The Emirates have joined the coalition against the Islamic State and are engaged in air operations in Syria. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 25/09/2014)
