AFRICA/SUDAN - Severe floods are affecting tens of thousands of new refugees in Darfur

Nyala (Agenzia Fides) - More than 3,000 homes have been destroyed by torrential rains that have recently hit the refugee camps of Nierteti in central Darfur. In the south of the Country, in the camp in Kalma, near Nyala the capital of the State, 700 homes have been destroyed. According to Radio Dabanga, the victims of Nierteti are living in the open without any shelter and are in urgent need of help.
In the camp in Kalma floods have also blocked many roads and are seriously damaging the health of displaced persons who in order to protect themselves from the sun and rain are using bags. They desperately need help in particular those recorded in 2014, without any kind of shelter and sustenance, despite months ago, representatives of humanitarian organizations had promised to provide help immediately. Approximately 3,000 new refugee families have not yet received food. Since March the camps in South Darfur have welcomed tens of thousands of new arrivals, after the paramilitary Forces attacked and burned many villages in the south-east area of Nyala.
