ASIA/HONGKONG - Hong Kong Catholic doctors teach health care in Taunggyi diocese in Myanmar

Thursday, 2 December 2004

Hong Kong (Fides Service) - A medical team of four Hong Kong doctors and a nurse recently returned from a mission in Myanmar, where, in Taunggyi diocese, one of the poorest in the county, they trained missionaries and local people how to nurse and give basic medical care.
During a meeting at St Ignatius Chapel belonging to the Hong Kong Association of Catholic Doctors the team told Hong Kong’s diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao about their missionary experience. The meeting was organised by the Association in collaboration with the Association of Catholic Nurses and the diocesan commission for health pastoral.
During the meeting of prayer and sharing one of the doctors said “the people and the religious in Taunggyi are very poor and medical care is a luxury they cannot afford. Even an ordinary intestinal infection can be fatal. All they can do is pray while they die. But there is widespread love and charity in the community for the sick”. The team agreed that they had offered help to the people of Taunggyi, but in return they received a lesson of faith and witness.
