AMERICA/MEXICO - "To be free is to recognise goodness and see that evil enslaves”: Independence Day celebrations

Tuesday, 16 September 2014

Tehuantepec (Agenzia Fides) – "Freedom is not a cry, freedom is not a declaration, freedom is an experience in which we citizens can live in harmony and with respect for one another": this was said by Bishop Oscar Armando Campos Contreras, of Tehuantepec, on the occasion of celebrations for Mexico’s Day of Independence, today 16 September. Bishop Campos spoke at the start of celebrations, saying: "These holidays teach is that we are a nation that has moved as one since 1810, but much remains to be done so we can say we are truly free ".
The Bishops continued: "to be free is to discover goodness and move towards it because evil enslaves", and he added: "in society today many things lead to slavery, we must know and admit this. Therefore if we are to move towards what is good, we must recognise the value of the human person, the value of human dignity and the value of human life. In a society where life is not respected, the individual is not respected, there is no respect for the human person, or for the rights of the individual. A society in which citizens fail to recognise their duties, demanding only their rights, is a society which is not truly free".
Mons. Campos concluded: "A society in which there are thousands of poor people, millions of poor people is also a society which enslaves, imposes certain patterns, economic patterns, often humiliating and leading to a life of misery ". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/09/2014)
