Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "There is no fighting in Maiduguri, instead there is fighting in certain towns nearby" says to Fides Agency Fr. Patrick Tor Alumuku, Director of Social Communications of the Archdiocese of Abuja, who is in contact with a priest in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State (in the north-eastern part of Nigeria).
A few days ago the Forum of Elders of Borno State had raised the alarm about the imminence of an attack by Boko Haram against the city. "From what we know the situation is relatively calm in Maiduguri. The soldiers are everywhere, they patrol the streets and protect churches and parishes", said Fr. Patrick.
The army announced that it had inflicted a severe blow on a Boko Haram group that had attacked the town of Konduga, about 35 kilometers from Maiduguri. During the battle which lasted three hours, according to a military spokesman, about 200 militants were killed and several weapons and military equipment were recovered by government soldiers. (L.M.)
