AFRICA/LIBERIA - Children orphaned by ebola: One of the side effects of the virus

Saturday, 13 September 2014

Monrovia (Agenzia Fides) - 20% of Liberian children under 2 years of age have lost their parents to the epidemic of Ebola which, since last March, has had a devastating impact in West Africa. Many remain completely alone, abandoned on the streets, without shelter, food or medical care. Almost all health centers are closed or partially work. Children are not treated even for the most common pediatric diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea and severe acute malnutrition. Both in Liberia and Sierra Leone over 3 and a half million children cannot return to school, which remain closed. According to the World Health Organization, the outbreak of Ebola in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal, has so far recorded 4,269 cases and 2,288 deaths.
