San Jose (Agenzia Fides) - In Costa Rica, child labor is strictly prohibited by law up to 15 years of age, from 15 to 18 years of age precise rules have to be respected. Currently there is a lot of collaboration and commitment in the Country to try to eradicate the exploitation of minors. However, begging or selling items on the streets remain hard to combat. The children are forced to work without a fixed schedule, without remuneration. Not many complaints arrive, according to PANI (Patronato Nacional de la Infancia), each year about 25 complaints are received while acknowledging that the phenomenon is widespread and there are more than 47 thousand children who are victims of this abuse. According to data from the International Labour Office, in 2013 worldwide, 168 million children were employed, of these, 85 million engaged in risky activities. In Latin America alone about 13 million boys and girls were exploited. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 09/06/2014)
