AFRICA/SUDAN - Rapes, theft and destruction against the displaced persons in the refugee camp in Zamzam

Wednesday, 21 May 2014

Nyala (Agenzia Fides) - The displaced people in the refugee camp in Zamzam, in El Fasher in North Darfur, have been living days of terror since the militia and paramilitary forces of the Central Reserve Forces, known as Abu Tira, raped some women and destroyed a large drinking water reservoir within the camp. As reported by a witness to the local radio station Radio Dabanga, women had just arrived in the area after fleeing the ongoing conflicts in their respective villages in Kobe, 45 km west of El Fasher. The attackers raped the women in turn. Soon after, the armed men started shooting, destroying the drinking water reservoir that gives water to 12 thousand displaced people, about a quarter of the entire population of the camp. The fury and violence of the Abu Tira was carried out even within the market area, where they beat some men, attacked and robbed passers-by. Because of this serious wave of violence, traders have closed their businesses. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/05/2014)
