ASIA/PHILIPPINES - In southern Philippines Christians join Muslims at the end of Ramadan

Friday, 12 November 2004

Zamboanga (Fides Service) - While there is hope for the imminent resumption of negotiations between the Philippines government and separatist Muslim movements fighting for independence in Mindanao, at the same time initiatives of dialogue and friendship at the social and religious level between Christians and Muslims have been flourishing. Mindanao is home to a Muslim minority of 5 million, (6% of the Philippines population of 80 million) with Muslim culture, traditions and customs. In recent years separatist groups have formed and armed groups have been fighting for secession Manila. In this scenario the local Church has always sought to be a factor of reconciliation, promoting dialogue and reconciliation with the Muslim community.
Ramadan 2004 was marked by various Christian/Muslim joint initiatives: in Zamboanga, in Mindanao, the Interfaith Council of Leaders, Christian and Muslim leaders, organised meetings and meals to break the daylight fast kept by Muslims during Ramadan. On 7 and 12 November there were meetings in various communities to explain to non Muslims some Islamic practices and religious rites and to read and reflect on the annual Message to Muslims issued on behalf of the universal Church by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. This year the message highlighted the need to help children abused in so many ways.
In the southern Philippines the month of Ramadan started under the banner of dialogue. Silsilah or “chain” Community in Zamboanga opened by Italian PIME missionary Father. Sebastiano d’Ambra, organised prayer meetings and cultural meetings with Muslims in a spirit of communion and reconciliation. In a message expressing respect and appreciation for the Islamic religion and good wishes to all Muslims in the country for a month of Ramadan, Silsilah Community said it hoped the month would bring believers closer to God and neighbour.
In Mindanao Catholics are working to improve relations with Muslims, helping them to integrate socially and feel they are citizens like everyone else. The objective is to trigger a virtuous circle of peace and especially among school children and university students.
