ASIA/IRAQ - Women prisoners in the house: illiterate, poor and marginalized

Friday, 17 January 2014

Mosul (Agenzia Fides) - The current conditions of poverty, violence and discrimination in Iraq weigh more on women who, in a male-dominated society, just look after children and the home. Most are illiterate, and become "prisoners in the house": ignorant, poor and marginalized.
The organization Etana is committed to providing women with opportunities denied by poverty, by local mafias, religious persecution in addition to the male-dominated society. To try to change this situation Etana, which since 2006 has worked in various towns of the region, has proposed Manos Unidas, a Catholica NGO, a program for the education and training of women so that they can do a job, which would allow them to meet their needs and enhance their role in society. The organization also offers an environmental and recycling program. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 17/01/2014)
