AFRICA - Leaders of 11 African countries come together to discuss peace and security in Great Lakes region

Kampala (Fides Service) - Leaders of 11 countries are meeting in Munyonyo on Lake Victoria, about 15 km from the Ugandan capital Kampala, to discuss, among other topics, defence and security, border questions, cooperation in the fight against armed groups and the proliferation of weapons, how to dissipate mutual distrust among governments. The main objective of the meeting is to identify points of an agreement to be signed in a summit in Tanzania 10-20 November on peace and security in the Great Lakes region.
They will also refer explicitly to the attitude of the media often said to be hostile, ethnic and religious intolerance, risk of genocide, and international interference. The meeting also takes into account the agreement reached last week in Kigali (capital of Rwanda) between Uganda, Rwanda e Democratic Congo for full collaboration for security and cooperation against guerrilla groups. The 11 countries taking part are directly or indirectly involved in the Great Lakes region : Angola, Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Central African Republic Democratic Congo, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
