OCEANIA/NEW ZEALAND - Rector of Holy Cross inter-diocesan Seminary in Auckland appointed

Vatican City (Fides Service) - Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples appointed, 15 September 2004, Rector of the Seminary for all the ecclesiastical circumscriptions in New Zealand Holy Cross Seminary in the diocese of Auckland, Rev. Philip Damian Handforth, of the diocesan clergy of Auckland.
The new Rector was born in Bangor, Wales, UK, on 21 September 1947. He has 16 years of experience in radio and television. He studied philosophy at Holy Name Seminary Christchurch and theology at Holy Cross Seminary at Mosgiel. He was ordained a priest on March 10, 1989 at Takapuna, Auckland. He has since been assistant priest and parish priest in a number of parishes. In 1999 he joined the team of formation staff at Holy Cross Seminary and in 2001 was appointed spiritual director. (S.L.)
