EUROPE/ITALY - Bambino Gesu Children’s Hospital in Rome is an example of Christian witness through health care

Rome(Fides Service) - Bambino Gesu Children’s Hospital in Rome, the first of its kind in Italy, was opened in 1869 by Duke and Duchess Arabella and Scipione Salviati. Deeply distressed to see the lack of attention given to children in ordinary hospitals, the couple made one of their residences into a hospital for sick children. They dedicated the 12 bed house situated on the banks of the River Tiber in the Regola district of Rome to the Child Jesus, calling it “Bambino Gesu”.
Today, some 130 years later, the hospital is part of a healthcare network and since the 1980s it has been a reference point for paediatric medicine in Italy and abroad. In the last 30 years it has focussed on specialised care of little patients who now come from all over Europe.
In March 2003 the Hospital Bambino Gesu was among the most convinced supporters of a Permanent Conference of Paediatric and Maternity Hospitals set up to coordinate the activity of seven of the most important institutes in Italy.
The Conference is a non competitive network aimed at sharing knowledge and experience in the field of Paediatric and Maternity health care to improve the scientific development and management of the hospitals and offer ever better service.
Today the Conference, which is open to all such Institutes in Italy, has the following members: IRCCS Bambino Gesù in Rome; IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste; IRCCS Giannina Gaslini in Genoa; A.O. A. Meyer in Florence; A.O. Regina Margherita - Sant’Anna in Turin; A.O. Salesi in Ancona; A.O. Santobono-Pausilipon in Naples.
